We are hiring a Project Manager for a fully funded, innovative landscape restoration project led by the Sugar Loaf Regeneration Farm Partnership CIC.
Background
Sugar Loaf Mountain (Mynydd Pen-y-fâl) is a prominent feature in the landscape of the Black Mountains, in the southeast corner of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, South Wales. One of the most recognisable and highest peaks in the Black Mountains at 596m, Sugar Loaf Mountain has a significant environmental, cultural and economic role within the local and wider communities.
A collaboration between local farmers, local woodland creation charity Stump Up For Trees and the underlying landowner, the National Trust, has led to the establishment of a Community Interest Company, the Sugar Loaf Regeneration Farm Partnership CIC (SLRFP CIC). SLRFP CIC successfully applied for funding in the first round of the Welsh Government’s Integrated Natural Resources Scheme (INRS). This project is a collaborative initiative to restore the ecological, economic, amenity and cultural value of this iconic Welsh mountain. The CIC, formed to test and trial collaborative approaches to landscape restoration, nature recovery and sustainable farm improvements, will provide governance and oversight, while coordinating the activities, delivering the outcomes and reporting on the project.
The project includes an extensive plan of actions and interventions to deliver ecological restoration in what has become a Bracken-dominated landscape, using nature-based solutions, whilst increasing individual farm business resilience. These actions and interventions include, inter alia, bracken reduction, water management by creating ponds and wetlands, targeted woodland and hedgerow creation, a woodland management programme and a community engagement programme). There will also be a programme of research and surveys on CIC member farms and smallholdings adjacent to Sugar Loaf Common.
This project is the first stage in a long-term programme to deliver landscape recovery on Sugar Loaf Mountain, including the common land and adjacent farms, a total area of c.3,000ha. The project will inform Welsh Government policy; it will also be instrumental in the creation of the vision and the methodology for financing landscape recovery in Wales. The impact of this project will be felt for multiple generations.
