Annual Plant Survey on Bryn Arw – 2026

Each year, we return to Bryn Arw to carry out a plant survey, monitoring the diversity seen in this beautiful upland habitat. We are looking at changes in vegetation across the hillside as the saplings mature in areas of planting and compare this to areas which haven’t been planted.

About the Survey 🌿

This year’s survey took place in May, with a small group of SUFT staff and volunteers. Returning to the same locations each year, we record plant species across key areas of the hill. Despite some “changeable” weather (howling wind, fog, rain and sun!), conditions were generally favourable for identifying early summer flora.

Key Findings

There are early signs of upland plant species beginning to re-establish alongside young tree growth, e.g. bilberries and common bedstraw (photo), previously suppressed by bracken.  A full report to follow next month, so watch this space!

Why This Matters

Annual surveys like this are vital for tracking changes in plant communities and tree establishment and to look at variations between areas where SUFT have planted trees to areas they haven’t. This helps guide efforts to restore Bryn Arw to a healthy, diverse hillside.

Looking Ahead

As a long-term monitoring project Bryn Arw is nearly unique in having yearly data collected during the growth stages of a broadleaf woodland. This is providing continuous feedback for us to improve new planting projects, develop the management plan for Bryn Arw and trial techniques for establishing trees in Bracken.

Community Effort

We’d like to thank all the volunteers who contributed their time and expertise. Their efforts make this work possible! If you're interested in joining future surveys, we’d love to hear from you – drop us a line hello@stumpupfortrees.org.
